Hallkelsstaðahlíð is a peaceful camping site located 100km northwest of Reykjavik. To reach the campsite, take route 54 from Borgarnes and head west. When you reach route 55 (Heydalsvegur), turn right and follow the blue sign with a map of the Hnappadalur area at the crossroads. It's a 15km drive from there, and the campsite is conveniently located with equal traveling distance to Borgarnes, Stykkisholmur, and Budardalur (50km). The campsite offers numerous amenities, including toilets, drinking water, and horseback riding tours arranged by the friendly staff. You'll find several hiking trails and walking paths around the lakes and mountains, and you can purchase a license to fish in Lake Hlidarvatn, which is adjacent to the camping site and only a short walking distance away. During your stay, there are many exciting places to explore nearby, such as the six volcanic craters, as well as the cave Gullborgarhellir. These places and others are only a 10-30 minute drive away. If you're an experienced hiker, you can also hike up Mountain Geirhnjukur (898m), which offers a magnificent view from the top.
