Route Overview:

  • Length and Location: Álftavatnskrókur spans approximately 20 kilometers, connecting the northern and southern regions of the Fjallabak Nature Reserve.
  • Terrain: The road traverses a variety of landscapes, including gravel tracks, lava fields, and river crossings, offering drivers a diverse and scenic experience.

Vehicle Requirements:

  • 4x4 Necessity: Due to its challenging terrain, F233 is only suitable for 4x4 vehicles with very high ground clearance.
  • Driver Experience: It's recommended that drivers have prior experience with river crossings and off-road driving to navigate this route safely.

River Crossings:

  • Syðri-Ófæra River: One of the most significant challenges on F233 is the crossing of the Syðri-Ófæra river. This river can be deep and fast-flowing, making it a serious obstacle for drivers.
  • Safety Precautions: Before attempting to cross, it's crucial to assess the river's depth and flow rate. If uncertain, wait for another vehicle to cross first or consider an alternative route.

Seasonal Accessibility:

  • Open Season: F233 is typically open during the summer months, usually from late June to early September, depending on weather conditions and road maintenance.
  • Weather Conditions: Icelandic weather can be unpredictable. Travelers should always check the latest weather and road conditions before setting out.

Points of Interest:

  • Álftavötn Lake: Along the route, you'll find Álftavötn, a serene lake, offering picturesque views and a sense of tranquility.

Accommodation – Álftavötn Hut:

The Álftavötn Hut accommodates up to 20 people, with camping available nearby. It features WC and running water during the high season. The hut is equipped with a gas stove, outdoor grill, and kitchenware for guests to use.

You can book your accommodation through www.utivist.is or by calling 562-1000.

Originally used by farmers gathering sheep from the highlands, the Álftavötn Hut was rebuilt by Útivist in recent years and now offers cozy and comfortable accommodation. While there is no warden at the hut, the Strútur Hut warden also oversees Álftavötn.

Accommodation and camping fees can be paid at the Strútur Hut, at the Útivist office in Reykjavík, or by placing the fee in a special container at the hut.

To reach the hut, take road F208 from Skaftártunga and turn left onto road F233 north of the Hólaskjól highland center. You'll need to cross the unbridged Syðri-Ófæra River; it’s recommended to ask the warden at Hólaskjól for guidance on the best crossing point. After crossing, take a left turn and walk the final 200 meters to the hut.

The cancellation policy allows for a full refund if canceled 7 days or more before your booking, with the exception of a 1,000 ISK deposit per person per night. Cancellations made within 7 days are non-refundable.

Safety Considerations:

  • Preparation: Ensure your vehicle is suitable for F-road conditions, carry necessary supplies, and inform someone of your travel plans.
  • Driving Conditions: F-roads are rough, unpaved gravel tracks that are not regularly maintained. Drivers must be experienced and committed to safe, slow, and obstacle-conscious driving to deter danger.
  • Weather: Icelandic weather is unpredictable; always check the latest forecasts before setting out.

Traveling F233 – Álftavatnskrókur offers a unique opportunity to experience Iceland's highland beauty, with its rugged landscapes and proximity to glacial areas. Proper preparation, a suitable vehicle, and awareness of current conditions are essential for a safe and rewarding journey.
