F208 North (Fjallabaksleið Nyrðri North)

  • Route Description: F208 North connects the southern end of F26 (Sprengisandsleið) to the Landmannalaugar area. This section is generally considered more accessible, with fewer river crossings and relatively smoother terrain compared to its southern counterpart.
  • Road Conditions: While still a mountain road, F208 North is known to be easier to drive, with fewer challenging segments. However, drivers should remain cautious, as conditions can vary, and weather can change rapidly.
  • Scenic Highlights: Travelers on F208 North can enjoy views of the colorful rhyolite mountains of Landmannalaugar, geothermal areas, and expansive lava fields.
  • Vehicle Requirements: A 4x4 vehicle is recommended for F208 North to handle potential rough patches and ensure safety.

F208 South (Fjallabaksleið Nyrðri South)

  • Route Description: F208 South stretches from the Landmannalaugar area down to the southern Ring Road near Vík. This section is renowned for its challenging driving conditions and breathtaking scenery.
  • Road Conditions: F208 South is considered the tougher route into Landmannalaugar, featuring multiple river crossings, including the notable Kylslahólmar, Halldórsdalur, and Kirkjufellfoss rivers. These crossings can be 40 to 60 centimeters deep and present quite a challenge.
  • Scenic Highlights: The landscapes along F208 South are among Iceland's most beautiful, encompassing volcanic terrains, moss-covered lava fields, and panoramic mountain vistas.
  • Vehicle Requirements: Due to the demanding nature of F208 South, a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle is essential. Drivers should be experienced in navigating rough terrains and river crossings.
