Exploring Hraunsfjörður in the North of Snæfellsnes

Hraunsfjörður is a captivating fishing spot located about 180 km from Reykjavík, nestled between Stykkishólmur and Grundarfjörður. Accessible via Borgarnes, the journey continues through Mýrar and Vatnaleið, guiding you towards Stykkishólmur. Upon crossing the heath, turn left towards Grundarfjörður, and after about 4 km, signs will lead you to the fishing area.

Hraunsfjörður is a delightful fishing location, encompassing a lagoon within the dam at Hraunsfjörður. The area is spacious, teeming with fish, including trout, sea char, and salmon.

Fishing Zone: Explore the Lagoon

Anglers are allowed to fish within the lagoon, but fishing below the dam is strictly prohibited. Note that fishing near the dam should maintain a distance of at least 20 m, with a minimum of 100 m to the west, as the western slope is owned by Berserkseyri and does not belong to the fishing area.

Accommodation

Good camping facilities for tents and campers are available near the lake. However, there are no organized camping sites or sanitation facilities. A path west of the lake provides access to the fjord's bottom. Additionally, farm lodging in Eyrarsveit and accommodation in Grundarfjörður and Stykkishólmur are recommended.

The lake is home to mainly trout, char, and occasional salmon.

Optimal Fishing Times: July and August Shine

Prime fishing times are in July and August. Good spring fishing, particularly for sea char, has been reported in April and May. Trout are active on the surface in spring, while char tends to go deeper towards the fjord's bottom, especially on hot days. Fishing is relatively even throughout the summer, with higher expectations for salmon and sea char in August.

Dog owners are advised to keep their pets under control, considering incidents where dogs have chased livestock.
