Getting There from Reykjavík
Vífilsstaðavatn is situated in Garðabær, east of Vífilsstaður.
About the Lake
- Elevation: The lake is at an elevation of 38 meters above sea level.
- Size: It covers an area of about 0.27 km².
- Description: The lake is popular among anglers and is considered a must-visit for the first catches of the year. It is also ideal for practicing fly fishing.

Individual day licenses for fishing in Vífilsstaðavatn can be purchased.
Fishing Area
Fishing is allowed from the southern bank of the lake and east of it, extending to the western side of the pier (see map). Fishing on the southern side of the lake and under the slope to the east is recommended.
Accommodation
Camping is not allowed by the lake.
Fish Species and Bait
- Fish: Mainly trout and Arctic char, with a significant presence of smaller trout. Larger fish, typically weighing 1-2 pounds, are also caught. The fish from the lake are excellent for consumption.
- Bait: Only flies, worms, or spinners are allowed. All other bait and attractants are strictly prohibited.
Best Fishing Times
The best fishing is generally experienced in spring, particularly in May and June.
Other Information
The lake is a nature reserve owned and managed by Garðabær. Local anglers or those holding the Fishing Card should be cautious and follow the guidelines posted in the reserve.
Rules and Regulations
- Vífilsstaðavatn was declared a nature reserve on November 2nd, 2007.
- Dogs must be on a leash, and a complete dog ban is enforced in the reserve from April 15th to August 15th.
- The use of motorboats and kayaks is prohibited.
- Anglers with fishing rods are not required to register before heading out but must have their Fishing Card when asked by the fishing warden.
- Anglers are urged to treat the reserve with care, refraining from littering or disturbing the birdlife.
