Landmannalaugar - Blahnúkúr Trail

Embark on a thrilling adventure by hiking Blahnúkúr, the striking blueish-gray mountain located in Landmannalaugar.

^Trailhead

To reach the trailhead, begin at the Landmannalaugar campground, where the majestic Blue Peak dominates the landscape. Follow the riverbed in the direction of Blahnúkúr, embarking on a flat 0.8 km stroll from the campground to the trailhead. Look out for a sign indicating the start of the trail at the mountain's base. Prior to reaching the trailhead, you will encounter a small river, crossed by a bridge.

Once you commence the ascent from the trailhead, be prepared for a steady uphill climb.

The trail will occasionally present steep sections, featuring switchbacks and short, challenging ascents. However, the breathtaking views that progressively unfold will make the climb well worth it.

Once you reach the summit, you can indulge in the captivating sight of snow-capped rytholite mountains, rivers, and an array of vibrant colours.

Upon reaching the summit, you have the option to retrace your steps and descend back to Landmannalaugar the same way you came. However, for a fresh perspective, we recommend continuing the hike as a loop, extending your adventure.

The descent from Mt. Blahnúkúr leads eastward, eventually guiding you to Graenagil, a captivating canyon that slices through the mountains. The journey from the peak to the canyon is a straightforward and downhill hike, offering ease and tranquility.

During your descent, you will encounter a fork in the trail. Opting for the right trail will lead to a very steep descent back down to the canyon. Conversely, taking the left trail, although longer, offers a less steep route. We recommend the longer trail.

To return to Landmannalaugar, follow the Blahnúkúr trail, which will lead you to the riverbed. Look for yellow trail markers, which should now be visible. Cross the riverbed and continue following the yellow trail markers, directing you towards the Laugahraun lava field.

The stroll through Graenagil Canyon is a pleasant and mostly downhill experience, as you traverse the gorge. The approximate distance from Mt. Blahnúkúr back to Landmannalaugar Campsite is 1 km.
