Brennisteinsalda, the „sulphur mountain," offers a captivating hiking experience in a unique volcanic landscape, while you already in Landmannalaugar, is easily accessible from campsite.
This remarkable trek, takes you beyond the eastern base of Mt Brennisteinsalda, leading you over its summit. As a result, you get an up-close experience of the multitude of colors and breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Commence the journey at the campsite, ascending through the Graenagil Valley, and traversing the western edge of the lava field. Turn left onto the Laugavegur Trail (marked in red), then make a right to embark on the steep but brief climb to the peak of Brennisteinsalda.
The views overlooking the lava field from this vantage point are exceptional.
Following the descent on the other side, the path gently leads towards Vondugil. This section offers pleasant and easy walking alongside a broad valley, offering splendid vistas of the rhyolite mountains. Finally, rejoin the Laugharaun and follow the path (marked in red and white) across the lava field back to Landmannalaugar.
