The Hveradalir Circle hiking trail in Kerlingarfjöll offers a journey through a geothermal wonderland. This circular route is marked for hikers to follow.

Parking Area

To begin the hike, head to the parking area at Hveradalir, located at coordinates N 64° 38.787 V 19° 16.744. Only for 4x4 vehicles. From there, follow the marked trail towards the edge, descending down some steps. The trail continues, marked and crossing over Ásgarðsá on two pedestrian bridges. To help navigate the clay slopes of the area, steps have been built along the route.

Hiker's Paradise, a Photographer's Dream

Throughout the hike, you will be mesmerized by the sight of numerous hot pools, mud springs, boiling mudpots, steam vents, and fumaroles closely packed together. The colors created by the different condensates of sulphur and salts are truly unique. It is crucial to stay on the marked paths to protect the environmentally sensitive area.

In Hveradalir, vegetation is sparse, but you will come across some mosses as well as navel lichen and thrombium lichen, which hold high conservation value.

It is recommended to exercise caution while hiking, especially during sections with up and down slopes, as the steps and paths can be slippery. Wear suitable hiking gear, including sturdy footwear, and dress in layers according to the weather conditions. Carry enough water, snacks, and any necessary personal items for a comfortable and safe hike.

The Hveradalir Circle trail will lead you back to the parking area at Hveradalir, completing the circular route.
