Situated in the Hólmavatnsheiði area of Dölum, Hólmavatn is an excellent fishing destination. The lake is approximately 180 km from Reykjavík or 30 km from Búðardal. To reach it, take Bröttubrekka towards Búðardal, turning onto Laxárdal on Route 59. Drive 24.8 km to the Sólheimar farm for angler registration. From there, it's about a 5 km drive on a rough road, suitable for well-equipped and high-clearance 4x4 vehicles, with jeeps being the most suitable.
Hólmavatn spans around 1 km2 and is situated at an elevation of approximately 190 m above sea level.

Anglers are allowed to fish in the entire lake in front of Sólheimar farm. Fishing is also permitted from the outlet east of the lake to the northern point where Reiðgötuvatn reaches towards the lake – indicated by the blue line on the map. Fishing in Gullhamarsvatn and Selvötn is included. Gullhamarsvatn is north of Hólmavatn and east of Gullhamar, located by the lake. Selvötn are east of Hólmavatn and east of Selhólar, with Sellækur running between Hólmavatn and Selvatn. These lakes are within a short walking distance from Hólmavatn.
Camping by the lake is allowed free of charge at your own risk and in consultation with the landowner, although there are no sanitation facilities available. Additionally, the guesthouse Jónsbúð by the lake, maintained by Stangveiðfélag Borgarness, is available for rent. It accommodates 6-7 people and features a kitchen and dining room but does not have electricity. For reservations, contact svfbjonsbud@gmail.com, with a nightly rental fee of kr. 10,000.
Hólmavatn offers excellent fishing with both trout and char, with Montana Green being a particularly effective fly. The lakes of Selvötn and Gullhamarsvatn, which are accessible from Hólmavatn, are also worth exploring.
Anglers can use a variety of baits, including flies, worms, and spinners. Netting is strictly prohibited.
The lake promises good fishing throughout the summer.
