Tucked away in the breathtaking Eastern Highlands of Iceland lies Laugarfell, a serene mountain retreat that offers the perfect escape into nature. This hidden gem is home to the Waterfall Circle, also known as the Laugarfell Loop, an 8-kilometer hiking trail that winds through some of the most stunning landscapes in the region. Starting and ending at Laugarfell, the trail offers hikers the chance to explore five waterfalls and a picturesque canyon, all while basking in the peaceful solitude of the Icelandic wilderness.
Laugarfell is not just a starting point for hikes but also a charming mountain hut that offers accommodation, camping, and a restaurant. Visitors can unwind in one of the two natural hot spring pools, where on clear days, they are treated to spectacular views of Mt. Snæfell. According to local folklore, the waters in these hot springs are believed to have healing powers, adding an air of mysticism to the already tranquil surroundings.
What sets Laugarfell apart from other tourist destinations is its isolation. There are no inhabited farms or buildings in the vicinity, making it an ideal base for those looking to enjoy peaceful hikes, free from the bustling crowds. The hikes here, including the Waterfall Circle, are perfect for anyone craving a quiet, immersive experience in nature.
The Waterfall Circle is a well-marked trail, guided by yellow poles, that takes hikers through a varied landscape of canyons, streams, and waterfalls. Along the route, you’ll discover five waterfalls, with the most famous being Kirkjufoss and Faxi.
The hike offers a wonderful balance of activity and solitude. While the trail is gaining popularity, it remains relatively undiscovered, and hikers often find themselves alone for long stretches of the journey. When we did the hike, we only occasionally encountered other adventurers, allowing us to fully appreciate the beauty and serenity of the area.
After completing the loop, there’s no better way to recover from the hike than by taking a dip in Laugarfell’s rejuvenating hot springs. The soothing warm waters, combined with the peaceful surroundings, create the perfect end to a day spent exploring the Icelandic wilderness. Whether you believe in the springs' legendary healing powers or not, there's no denying their calming effect after a long hike.
In all, the Waterfall Circle offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the raw beauty of Iceland's highlands. With its peaceful atmosphere, dramatic waterfalls, and healing hot springs, Laugarfell is truly a hiker's paradise, far off the beaten path.
