The Nyidalur/Jokuldalur Mountain Hut ITA is situated at an elevation of approximately 800 meters above sea level, at the mouth of the scenic valley Nyidalur (Jokuldalur). The Sprengisandur Route lies right beside them. The older hut, built in 1967, boasts two floors, a spacious entrance, a kitchen, a warden's room, a sleeping hall, and sleeping quarters upstairs. The newer hut features a kitchen, a warden's room, and a sleeping hall downstairs, with sleeping quarters upstairs. Both houses can accommodate up to 120 people in bunks and on mattresses on the floor. The kitchens are equipped with oil stoves, pots, and pans but no other utensils. During the peak season, July 1st to August 31st, the huts are attended by wardens, and the separate house provides WC and shower facilities. On a clear day, the views from the huts are simply breathtaking. The nearby Tungnafell glacier is easy to conquer from the well-vegetated Nyidalur valley (Jokuldalur), which also provides access to Pass Vonarskard across the Mjohals mountain ridge. Since the establishment of Europe's largest national park, Vatnajokull, on June 7th, 2008, Nyidalur/Jokuldalur has become one of the centres for the NP wardens. For those planning to visit, it's essential to book accommodation in the huts in advance and pay to secure a spot. The huts are open from July 1st to August 31st, with adult sleeping bag rates starting from Ikr. 11,000.00 and a 50% discount for children aged 7 to 15 years. Booking can be made online. In addition, a telephone line is available from July 1st to August 31st at +354 854 1194.
