GET DIRECTIONS
Laugavallalaug is a hidden geothermal hot spring in the remote Laugarvalladalur valley in East Iceland. What makes this spot unique is its natural hot waterfall, which works as a warm, soothing shower. The pool itself is naturally heated by geothermal activity, with the water staying around 40°C (104°F). It’s a perfect place to relax, especially after a long, chilly day exploring the Icelandic Highlands.
Getting there: However, getting to Laugavallalaug requires some effort. The hot spring is in a remote area, accessible only by rough mountain roads that require a 4x4 vehicle.
1. The easiest route is via Road 910 from Hallormsstaður, which is paved until the Kárahnjúkar dam, followed by a few kilometers on the bumpy F910.
2. Another option is taking Road 923, which also allows a stop at the stunning Stuðlagil Canyon before continuing on F910.
3. If you’re coming from the Askja area, be prepared for a long and challenging drive on F910.
There are no changing facilities or amenities at the hot spring, so visitors should come prepared. The water temperature can vary, and since there are no regulations, caution is advised. Despite the challenging journey, the experience of soaking in a natural hot pool beneath a warm waterfall in the middle of Iceland’s untouched wilderness is truly unforgettable.
