Getting There from Reykjavík and Nearby Settlements
The lake is approximately 600 km from Reykjavík, 74 km from Egilsstaðir, and 13 km from the main road.
About the Lake
- Depth: The lake has a deep trench in the middle, reaching a depth of 24 m.
- River Outflow: Lónskvísl flows from the lake, eventually joining Hofsá in Vopnafjörður.

Fishing Area
Fishing is permitted throughout the lake.
Accommodation
Access to tent sites is available for purchase. Additionally, accommodation can be arranged at Skjöldólfsstaðir (about 20 km away) or Aðalból, the easternmost village in Hrafnkelsdalur.
Fish Variety: Abundant Arctic Char
Sænautavatn is home to plentiful Arctic char, ranging from small to larger sizes. The lake's unique topography, where shallows and depths meet, provides an ideal environment for fishing. Fishing is particularly successful during the twilight hours.

Best Fishing Times: Consistently Good, Especially in May and June
Fishing is consistently good throughout the season, with increased activity generally observed in May and June.
Rules and Regulations
- Littering is strongly discouraged, and off-road driving is strictly prohibited.
- Fishing cardholders must register at Sænautasel and present both the Fishing Card and valid identification.
- Children under 14 years old can fish for free under the supervision of cardholders.

- Refreshments, such as coffee and pastries, are available for purchase at Sænautasel. Advanced reservations can be made for meals.
