Getting There from Reykjavík and Nearby Settlements
The journey to Bolungavík is approximately 470 km via Arnkötludal, on a well-maintained road from Reykjavík. The lake is just a few kilometers from Bolungavík.
About the Lake
- Size: Approximately 1 km²
- Elevation: About three meters above sea level
- Fish Species: Arctic char, sea char, sea trout, and occasional salmon. The primary fishing area is near the river mouth, where Ósa river flows into the lake. Please avoid fishing near Miðdalsodda and Geirastaðaodda from May to June's end due to spawning grounds.

Fishing Area
Fishing is permitted throughout the lake and nearby rivers, Gilsá and Fossá, from April 1st to August 20th. However, fishing is restricted in Ósa river, which flows out of the lake, and the areas marked in Grjótnes and Vatnsnes. Special licenses for Ósa river can be obtained from veiditorg.is.

Bolungarvíkurkaupstað offers a company campsite and guesthouses, a swimming pool, and various recreational facilities.
Fish Variety: Local Arctic Char, Sea Char, and Trout
The lake is home to local Arctic char, sea char, sea trout, and occasional salmon. Trolling is also possible when the lake is frozen, but it should be done in consultation with the fishing warden.

Permitted bait includes fly, worm, and spinner.
Best Fishing Times: July and August
The most productive fishing months are July and August.
Rules and Regulations
- Free-roaming dogs are strictly prohibited.
- Littering is strongly discouraged, and off-road driving is strictly prohibited.
- Fishing cardholders must register their card numbers and personal identification numbers with the supervisor, Arnþór Jónsson at Geirastöðum. The fishing log is located in the box near the stairs at Geirastöðum, where the catch of the day should also be recorded.
- Children under 14 years old fish for free under the supervision of cardholders.
