Getting There from Reykjavík
- Þveit is approximately 450 km away from Reykjavík and about 10 km from Höfn in Hornafjörður. The lake is situated by the national road 1, providing easy access.
About the Lake
- Size: The lake covers an area of 0.91 km², with an elevation of 2 meters above sea level.
- Rivers: Myllulækur and Skrápslækur flow into the lake, and Þveitarlækur flows out of it. The proximity to the sea allows for fish migration between the lake and the ocean.

Fishing Area
- Fishing is allowed in the Stórulágar land, covering approximately half of the lake. The fishing area can be better identified on a provided map.
Accommodation
A new camping area, Tjaldsvæðið Myllulæk, has been opened nearby. Other accommodations, such as Fosshótel Vatnajökull, are approximately 2 km away from Þveit.
Fish Species and Bait
- Fish: The lake is home to Arctic char, brown trout, sea trout, and sea char.
- Bait: Permissible baits include flies, worms, and spinners.
Best Fishing Times
Good fishing can be experienced throughout the summer. However, spring and autumn tend to offer the best results.
Rules and Regulations
- Fishing is allowed only in the Stórulágar land. Fishing in the Þveitarlækur outlet, which is jointly owned by Stórulágar and Stapa, is strictly prohibited.
- Dogs are not allowed by the lake, and the use of boats requires permission from the landowner.
- Anglers are not required to register, but they must have their Fishing Card ready for inspection.
- Respect for the abundant birdlife is mandatory, and disrupting their peace is strictly forbidden. Anglers are also obliged to maintain cleanliness and avoid driving off-road.
- Children under 14 years old fish for free when accompanied by a cardholder.
Fishing Warden
Sigurður Sigfinnsson at Stórulág oversees the lake. Stórulág is located about 2 km north of the lake. Contact: 478-1353.
