Ljósavatn in Norðurland

Ljósavatn is situated in Ljósavatnsskarð in Suður-Þingeyjarsýsla, just east of Akureyri.

Directions and Distance from Reykjavík

To reach Ljósavatn, drive through Akureyri towards Húsavík. The lake is approximately 25 km from Akureyri and around 425 km from Reykjavík if traveling through Vaðlaheiðargöng.

About the Lake

Ljósavatn, at an elevation of 105 meters above sea level, covers an area of approximately 3.2 km². The lake's maximum depth is around 35m, with an average depth of about 10m. It is popular among anglers and well-suited for families. The national highway, Route 1, runs alongside the lake. Several streams, including Geitá and Litlutjarnalækur, flow into Ljósavatn, while Djúpá exits the lake.

Rules and Regulations

• Holders of the Fishing Card can go directly to fish without specific registration but must carry the Fishing Card to show to authorities.
• Anglers should fill out the fishing report online at https://veidikortid.is/veidiskraning at the end of their fishing session.
• Respect fishing bans in the Vatnsendi area. Off-road driving is prohibited. The use of boats is only allowed with the landowner's permission.
• Children under 14 fish for free under the supervision of cardholders. Local fishing wardens also sell day licenses for the lake.
