Ljósavatn is situated in Ljósavatnsskarð in Suður-Þingeyjarsýsla, just east of Akureyri.
To reach Ljósavatn, drive through Akureyri towards Húsavík. The lake is approximately 25 km from Akureyri and around 425 km from Reykjavík if traveling through Vaðlaheiðargöng.
Ljósavatn, at an elevation of 105 meters above sea level, covers an area of approximately 3.2 km². The lake's maximum depth is around 35m, with an average depth of about 10m. It is popular among anglers and well-suited for families. The national highway, Route 1, runs alongside the lake. Several streams, including Geitá and Litlutjarnalækur, flow into Ljósavatn, while Djúpá exits the lake.
Day licenses are available for purchase, offering access to multiple lakes.
Anglers are allowed to fish throughout the lake, excluding the Vatnsendi area from Geitá to Dauðatanga. Refer to the map for details.
Camping by the lake is not allowed unless in consultation with the landowners, and there are no designated sanitation facilities.
Ljósavatn is home to both Arctic char and trout.
Permitted bait includes flies, worms, and spinners.
The optimal fishing period is from May to mid-July.
