Located in the mesmerizing coastal setting of Reykir, Skagafjordur in North Iceland, lies the renowned bathing spot known as Grettislaug. Steeped in legend and lore, this geothermal pool holds a special place in Icelandic history.
Named after Grettir the Strong, the heroic protagonist of Grettis Saga, this legendary bathing spot offers breathtaking seaside views. Constructed using natural stones, the geothermal pool transports you to a realm where ancient tales come to life.
At Reykir in Skagafjordur fjord, visitors are treated to two geothermal pools, including the historic Grettislaug. According to the saga, Grettir, an outlaw residing on nearby Drangey Island, swam ashore and sought refuge in the warmth of the pool after a chilling swim. The connection to this saga and the presence of Drangey Island, visible from the pool, adds a touch of mystique to the experience.
Originally, there were two pools in the early 20th century—Reykjalaug, used for washing clothes, and Grettislaug. Sadly, a powerful storm ravaged both pools. However, in 1992, driven by their deep appreciation for these cultural treasures, locals united to rebuild them. The rejuvenated Grettislaug now stands as a testament to their dedication, while Reykjalaug has been renamed Jarlslaug in honor of Jon Eiriksson, a key figure in the rebuilding efforts.
